Teaching Context

In my instructional context, I provide ELL support at a K-5 public school in Langley, BC. About one third of the school population has listed a home language other than English on their registration forms. There are 27 home languages used other than English. Just over half of these students receive ELL support. Some support is provided in the class when there are several qualifying ELL students in one classroom. Some of the support is provided by pulling students out of class in small groups that have similar language learning needs. The lesson designed for this assignment is meant to be used in small group support for students in grades four and five that demonstrate an overall language proficiency of Expanding (3) or higher. These groups consist of 2-6 students and each session lasts for an average of 45 minutes.
